From School Library Journal

“Children who have had to share the holidays with unlikable relatives will appreciate these three short stories about Alf and his cousin Mert.
Mert embarrasses Alf at Thanksgiving, and ends up with his present at Christmas. Determined to avoid another crummy holiday, Alf decides to spend New Year’s Eve in his room, but even then, Mert comes to torment him. She returns his Spacecraft Radio (minus the knob that makes it work), and Alf presents her with the musical doll which he’d kept at Christmas. As Alf watches Mert depart, he pats the doll’s key, which remains hidden in his pocket. Wood’s dialogue is crisp and authentically childlike, and Hoffman’s characters are right on the mark with their quirky expressions and understated humor. Children will enjoy this as a refreshing change from too-good-to-be true holiday books, and they will be even more pleased that they can read these stories by themselves.”
